Once upon a time there was a pandemic that wiped out most of humanity, because few people were strong-willed enough to stay indoors and avoid social contact. Eventually there was just one man left alive.
He had lost his wife in the pandemic who had insisted on going shopping.
His friends went to the beach and came back gravely ill and died soon after. Eventually there was no more news on the radio or the internet and no electricity to check anyway.
Just him and his dog.
And after a few months holed up like this he finally went out.
It was utterly quiet, except for the sound of birds and insects.
They found and abandoned store and stocked up on toilet paper and pasta.
It was generally peaceful and the air was clean and fragrant.
Many months went by, the seasons changed, he learned to farm and hunt, to make a fire.
He talked to his dog and the dog listened attentively.
One day the dog got agitated and started barking. And soon the man saw a figure appear in the distance. It was a human figure. It was coming closer.
He watched as the figure approached. It was hard to tell, but it looked like it might be a woman. By the time the figure was close enough to see her clearly (it was a woman indeed), he knew what to do.
He shot her with his shotgun.
Him and his dog lived on happily ever after.
