I spent all of yesterday in Tokyo. I really like Tokyo, especially Shibuya and Shinjuku during rush hour. I know it sounds crazy. But there are very few places I have found that have a comparably dense energy: millions of frantic commuters trying to get to their trains, rushing to get snack in the departmentstore deli, pushing, fighting being passive agressively rude and selfish, selfish, selfish. You should try it sometime. It is the one time when it doesn't matter if you are Japanese or Gaijin. It is about getting what you want.

Humans and the pandemic

After just a few days of being locked in with a toddler and getting zero time to myself (not counting Netflix time - thank you, Netflix, my one and only babysitter and saviour!) I notice that I am full of aggression and that things that I would usually let go really upset me. On social media people have been posting about their life in quarantine, when really they are fine and just not able to go to the pub because it's closed. We are new to the situation and terminology, but 10 days in I really do expect you to know the difference between social distancing and being quarantined, as well as the difference between corona and coronary (heart disease), though they do share the latin root. I want to punch every one in the face who posts how the went to the park to meet a friend on day 10 of quarantine... you are obviously not in quarantine!!! Another word that makes me want to puke is the word "homeoffice". Is that a word? Who came up with this? And musings like "mee

Before Easter/ After Easter

A number of people are talking about how they are adhering to the lockdown rules until Easter. But then they will go out, see their grand-kids, shop till they drop and so on. There must be a misunderstanding. The danger will not have passed just because the Easter bunny has hopped off. In fact, the absolute numbers of people infected are higher than they were 5 weeks ago. I understand that it might be unrealistic to wait until a vaccine has been produced before goiung back out. But let's just be clear on the risks.
